6 Maintenance Checks That Should Be Done During Every Oil Change

An oil change is one of the most frequent services most vehicles receive, which makes it a useful time to check more than the oil itself. A few basic maintenance checks can reveal low fluids, tire wear, leaks, battery concerns, or worn components before they become harder to deal with.


That does not mean every oil change includes a full vehicle inspection. The exact service depends on the shop and vehicle. Still, combining an oil service with several practical checks can give you a better picture of the car's condition and help you plan upcoming work.


1. Check All Major Fluid Levels


Engine oil is only one of several fluids the vehicle depends on. During an oil change, it makes sense to check coolant, brake fluid, transmission fluid (when it is serviceable and accessible), power steering fluid on vehicles with hydraulic steering, and windshield washer fluid.


A low level deserves more attention than simply topping it off. Fluids normally remain within their operating range unless they are being consumed, leaking, or were never filled correctly after previous work. Finding the reason for repeated fluid loss is more useful than continuing to add fluid every visit.


2. Look for Fresh Fluid Leaks


Once the vehicle is raised for the oil change, technicians have a useful view of areas that drivers rarely see. Fresh oil around the oil pan, filter housing, timing cover, transmission, steering components, or cooling system can provide an early clue that a seal, hose, gasket, or fitting is beginning to leak.


Small seepage does not always require immediate repair, but knowing it exists makes it easier to monitor. A leak that has changed from light dampness to an active drip since the previous service deserves more attention, especially if it can lower a fluid level between visits or reach hot exhaust components.


3. Check Tire Pressure and Tread Wear


Tires should be checked regularly because pressure and tread condition affect handling, braking, tire life, and fuel use. Oil-change visits are a convenient time to measure pressure and look at tread depth across all four tires.


Uneven wear is often more informative than the amount of tread remaining. One shoulder wearing quickly may point toward an alignment or suspension concern, while excessive wear in the center or along both edges can be related to pressure history. Cuts, bulges, embedded objects, and sidewall damage should also be noticed before they develop into a roadside problem.


4. Inspect the Brakes Where Visible


An oil change does not replace a complete brake inspection, but visible brake components can often be checked while the vehicle is on a lift. Depending on wheel design and access, technicians may be able to spot thin brake pads, heavily worn rotors, leaking components, or damaged brake hoses.


Brake wear is not always even from side to side or inner pad to outer pad. If something looks questionable, a more thorough brake check may be recommended. Catching uneven wear early can help identify sticking hardware, caliper concerns, or other conditions before one component becomes severely worn.


5. Check Belts, Hoses, and the Cooling System


Accessory belts and coolant hoses spend years dealing with heat and vibration. They do not always fail with plenty of warning, so regular visual checks are useful.


Technicians can look for fraying, glazing, contamination, damaged belt ribs, cracked hoses, swelling, dried coolant residue, or loose connections. Belt tensioners and pulleys may also show unusual movement or noise. A small coolant stain near a hose connection can be especially useful for catching early issues because it may appear long before the driver sees a puddle.


6. Check the Battery and Basic Electrical Items


Battery condition becomes increasingly important as the battery ages. Corrosion at the terminals, loose connections, swelling, or signs of leakage can often be noticed during routine service.


Depending on the type of oil-change service, technicians may also check exterior lights, wipers, and washer operation. A failed brake light or worn wiper blade is easy to overlook in daily driving, yet both can create a real visibility or safety concern when conditions are poor.


Why These Checks Are Worth Doing Regularly


The main advantage of these checks is comparison over time. A tire that was wearing evenly at the previous visit may now show a developing pattern. A previously dry engine may have a new oil stain. A battery that tested well six months ago may now be showing signs of age.


That is where regular maintenance becomes useful. Repeated observations give technicians and drivers a history of the vehicle instead of a single snapshot. Small changes are easier to recognize when the car is checked at consistent intervals.


An Oil Change Should Still Use the Correct Oil and Filter


Extra checks are useful, but the oil service itself still has to be done correctly. The engine should receive the viscosity and performance specification required by the manufacturer, along with a suitable oil filter.


Using the wrong oil can affect lubrication, cold-start flow, variable valve timing operation, turbocharger protection, and other systems depending on the engine. The filter also needs enough capacity and quality to handle the full service interval.


Do Not Wait for a Warning Light to Check the Vehicle


Many maintenance concerns do not trigger a dashboard warning. Uneven tire wear, a small coolant leak, a cracked belt, or a weak battery may be developing quietly while the vehicle still feels normal from the driver's seat.


Using the oil-change visit as a recurring opportunity for an inspection can help reveal these issues earlier. It also makes it easier to separate repairs that need attention soon from items that can simply be monitored until a later service.

When I do not practice what I preach, I get a mouth full of soapy water! I preach to my customers, 'the cheapest part is not always the best option.' My story starts with my wash machine at home needing a new drain pump. I decided this was a job I could handle. I looked for the part online and found severl with a major difference in pricing and availablity. Anywhere from $19.00 to $85.00, WOW! From the picture they all looked the same and I could have the $19.00 pump the next day! So when the pump arrived, I checked it out and it looked the same on the outside. When I installed the pump, only one bolt hole did not line up correctly..ok..no big deal right? Now, the moment of truth. Let's try out the new pump. The first run went ok. I could hear the pump was noisy but it worked! Oh no.... on the second run, the pump was making noise but not pumping! I pulled the hose out of the drain pipe and could hear the pump making noises but not draining. So the little kid in me thinks, 'Lets blow in the drain hose and see what happens!" I am sure you can guess the rest of the story.. The mucky soap water came out like a fire hose into my mouth. Yep, I saved lots of money on the cheapest part and the only problem is that I have to blow into the drain hose to get it to work sometimes. Alright, I learned my lesson. The cheapest part is not always the best.. but why?? One reason is quality control. When a big corporation such as, General Motors or Whirlpool buys parts, they have a quality standard. Quality requirement might be batch testing e.g failure rate per 100,000 parts less than maybe 1%. This requires the manufacture to use certain internal parts and exact assembly requirements to meet the quality standard of the company. Higher reliability and higher cost. If another customer asked to buy the part and their rquirement is low cost only, then no problem. Lower price and lower reliability. Less expensive internal parts and lower manufacture times are used; such as precision alignment of bolt holes/tolerances. So how do we know the difference? Experience and reputation. It's not the manufactures fault, they are just filling the order. When a big corporation orders parts, e.g Whirlpool or a big name part supplier like World Pac, MOOG ect... They have a reputation to uphold. They have been in business for many years taking good care of their customers. Also, some part suppliers may even have higher standards than the original company. MOOG automotive suspension parts usually have a high quality standard. Upgrades are required when the engineers see an improvement. It takes experience to know who sells and/or distributes the best parts and also who will stand behind their part. When you see an Amazon fulfillment center or 'fulfilled by' check the name. XYMTHZ probably does not have the same standards as MOOG Automotive. Also, do not be afraid to ask at your local part store, "Who is the supplier or manufacture of the part?" If the name does not sound familiar, buyer beware!!! For those that want to pursue the job themselves, discount auto part stores may also have better quality parts but you have to ask for them. -Mark Dirsa
